A handicap is not an average score
The USGA describes a Handicap Index as a measure of demonstrated playing ability. It takes the course and tees into account, rather than simply averaging strokes over par.
Post a score
An acceptable score enters the player’s scoring record.
Account for difficulty
A Score Differential accounts for the course and tees played.
Calculate the index
With 20 scores, the lowest eight differentials form the starting point; safeguards can apply.
Fewer than 20 scores use a different calculation. A Course Handicap then translates an index into strokes for the specific tees. Neither number guarantees what someone will shoot.
